Snowden – Right or Wrong?

For whatever reason, words of a legendary philosopher have lingered deep in memory and came alive the other day for an explicit reason. The words are these: “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in times of comfort but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” They apply perfectly to film studios in Hollywood, not one of which would touch production of a great film we saw the other afternoon: “Snowden.” (Click on the blog's bold title to read the whole,)

What’s Ahead?

This morning I opened the paper to news that ought to inspire every Canadian. The good news is from our Prime Minister Trudeau who, on Monday at the UN, got huge standing applause when announcing that Canada has by now welcomed 31,000 Syrian refugees from the brutal oversight of the vicious Syrian leader, Basher Hafez al Assad. The Day I Cannot Forget

One day in my Globe office, for whatever reason, I came up with an idea for an article, one that addressed aspects of problems of poverty. I shared it with the staff. The College and the Doctor

My aging memory sometimes fails me but at other times surprises me with recollections so vivid they’ll remain forever. For example, it’s now almost 30 years since I went to a medical specialist, now deceased, for my yearly checkup in his area. He was an affable Jewish man so it was natural we talked about congregational matters, in his faith and mine. He knew I had served as a lay member on a board overseeing one of the professions. Those of us who shake our heads at the very mention of Donald Trump have reason to take some measure of comfort from words of a philosophic businessman Jack Ma. “Never give up,” he has said, “Today is hard, tomorrow may be worse, but the day after tomorrow will bring sunshine.” The “day after tomorrow” has arrived.
