Why This Idiocy on Campus?
It seems truly remote now -- that autumn of 1951-- when barely 17 years old, I stepped off a train in the leafy small town of Sackville, New Brunswick to begin life as a student at Mount Allison University. Do we have a right to privacy? Always?
It’s now many centuries since theologian Augustine spoke this historic view before his long ago death in 430 A.D. “Since God is the highest good, he would not allow evil to exist unless, in his omnipotence, God saw that goodness would come out of evil.” That’s probably the single hopeful aspect of the world’s current and most ugly scandal: the hacking of private nude photos of numerous American actresses who thought their online images were securely stored, thereby protected from the wide public. One of history’s most renowned men, Mahatma Ghandi – leader of India and father of the civil rights movement – once composed a short list of what he believed to be life’s most unethical practices. Ghandi gave his list, known now as The Seven Social Sins, to a grandson almost on the eve of his assasination in January, 1948. I mean on the laws around prostitution here and pretty well everywhere. After all it’s been around a long time from the birth of human beings.
